Outside the Lines: Creative Storytelling Activities for Children
All activities, except for the lunch program, will be held in the
“Soc. Pit” behind the Callen Conference Room, lower level of the
Smith-Curtis building. The lunch program will be held at the outdoor
amphitheatre behind Old Main.
9:00-9:45
- Linda Garcia – Hispanic storytelling for children; Linda Garcia
draws on her experiences as a young girl in Omaha’s Mexican-American
barrio to tell stories for children and families.
10:00-10:45
- N. L. Sharp – “Keeping a writer’s notebook”; Most writers keep a
notebook of some kind. You are invited to explore the power and
magic of this important writing tool as award-winning children’s
author, Nancy Sharp Wagner, shares from her own notebooks.
11:00-11:45
- Storytelling by Regina Leininger; Regina Leininger uses chants,
movements, puppets and props to entice her audience to become a part
of her stories. The stories she tells are multicultural tales from
around the world that will entertain and delight listeners from
pre-school to adult.
12:00-12:45
- Sack lunch program with Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones; Grab some
lunch and join us outside as Kiowa/Otoe-Missouria storyteller
Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones, in native attire, tells the tales of
his tribes. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, these stories reveal a
vision of the world—from the time of Creation to the coming of the
white man.
1:00-1:45
- Leta Powell Drake – “From page to stage”; Join Leta Powell Drake
as she reads from John Steptoe’s award-winning children’s book,
Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, and decide which part or character you
would like to play. When the storytelling ends, the performance
begins and you can help bring the story to life!
2:00-2:45
- N. L. Sharp – “Where do you get your ideas?”; This question is
the one most often asked of writers. Nancy will share some of her
favorite “secret weapons” to help you come up with your own ideas
for stories, articles, and poems.
3:00-3:45
- Ricardo Garcia – “Storytelling in action with help from the
listeners!”; This is your chance to learn and try different
storytelling techniques as writer and storyteller, Ricardo Garcia,
leads you through the telling of some Hispanic and Hispano tales.
4:00-5:00
- Rajean Luebs Shepherd – “C is for Cornhusker”; Traveling from
A-Z, author Rajean Luebs Shepherd will take you on a journey across
